Cruising and Weather Interruptions
Having just experienced several EF4 tornadoes in our community over Memorial Day weekend I am reminded that no matter how well prepared you are, severe weather can change everything – and that includes travel plans.
Even if you avoid hurricane season in the Atlantic or cyclone season in Asia, inclement weather can disrupt your cruise. Remember that cruise lines are not responsible for reimbursing you if weather precludes them from entering a port or requires a change in itinerary, although in some cases I have seen them offer some compensation to guests when that happens. And, although modern ships are adept at tracking and avoiding severe weather, at times even large ships can be buffeted about during high winds and storms at sea.
Note that shore excursions booked through the cruise line will be fully reimbursed if the ship is unable to dock in the port they were set to take place in. A good reason to consider the options offered by the cruise line!
Be prepared by knowing your tolerance for motion, too. If you have never cruised before give your doctor a call and ask for the best way to combat motion sickness should it occur. Choosing a cabin in the center of the ship (referred to as mid-ship) will also help to minimize the feel of movement while on board, although these cabins typically command higher prices than cabins in the front (fore) or rear (aft) of the ship. The extra might be well worth it, however!
A TIP – feeling motion sick on board? Try eating a green apple! Ships typically have them available.
There are lots of motion sickness medicines available commercially. If your doctor determines that they are safe for you to take try this tip –
A TIP – take your motion sickness pill at night. Even the less drowsy variety can cause some drowsiness, so it will help you sleep and you are more likely to feel alert by morning.
Be flexible! If plans change en route it is to ensure your safety and the safety of fellow guests. Cancelled port excursions are a chance to explore the ship and enjoy on board activities that you might have overlooked.
